Acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho is working on his next feature film and for a man who has done a wide variety of different stories, Ally will be a first for him.
As per Variety, Parasite director Bong Joon Ho will be directing his first animated feature film called Ally. This project has been in development since 2019. Bong co-wrote the script with Sleep‘s Jason Yu with Seo Woo-sik producing the film and Barunson C&C handling the production. The first visual features the protagonist Ally, a piglet squid who dreams of being the protagonist in a wildlife documentary but her plans change when an aircraft crashes into the sea.

Jae Hyung Kim (Toy Story 4 and Inside Out) will serve as the animation supervisor with David Lipman (Shrek) as supervising producer. Marcin Jakubowski (Klaus) will be the production designer with DNEG (Inception and Dune) doing the 3D animation work.
Bong’s debut feature film Barking Dogs Never Bite won him “Best New Director” at the Director’s Cut Awards. His next film, a monster film called The Host, won “Best Film” at the Asian Film Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards and the “Special Jury Prize” at the Busan Film Critics Awards. Snowpiercer, Bong’s debut English-language film, won “Best Screenplay” at the Busan Film Critics Awards and “Best Film” and “Best Director” at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.
Parasite, a black comedy thriller released in 2019, received critical acclaim for its screenplay, editing, and performances, making history at the Academy Awards for being the first non-English-language film to win “Best Picture” and the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or. The film also became the first non-English-language film to with the SAG for “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in Motion Picture.”
Ally will release in the later half of 2027.
