The Husky and His White Cat Shizun Manga Removes Ayano Yamane as Artist Due to Racist Comments

Ayano Yamane is no longer the artist for The Husky and His White Cat Shizun manga due to her past anti-Korea and anti-China tweets.

The announcement for Finder mangaka Ayano Yamane being signed on as the artist for the manga adaptation of The Husky and His White Cat Shizun had been mixed ever since the news was dropped. Initially, the reactions were polarizing due to fans’ differing opinions on the art style for the danmei, but in the two days since, the majority of fans’ calls for a change in artist have revolved around Yamane’s past comments about Korea and China.

Compiled by numerous users on X, formerly known as Twitter (1 and 2), Yamane has tweeted numerous anti-Korea and anti-China comments as far back as 2010–at least from the Tweets that still remain on her account. The contents of the Tweets range from harmful stereotypes about Korean and Chinese people via microaggressions to blatant insults. Note that these screenshots come from other X accounts taking screenshots of Ayano’s account and some have the Google translation rather than the original tweet.

Qianhe Xingyao, a company known for its merch for popular series such as The Husky and His White Cat Shizun, Little Mushroom, and more, released an official statement regarding the termination of the contract.

Official Statement:

Following the announcement of the artist for The Husky and His White Cat Shizun manga adaptation, we have been paying attention to the online discussions about the news. We place great importance in this and launched a thorough investigation immediately. We have reported our findings to our overseas collaborators.

This is a line that cannot be crossed. This is absolutely not tolerable.

Effective immediately, we will be terminating the contract with the artist involved with the manga adaptation. We will also be filing a complaint and demanding compensation. The artist will also be permanently blacklisted.

We would like to offer our apologies to fans who have loved The Husky and His White Cat Shizun. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

The Husky and His White Cat Shizun manga social media account issued a statement about the suspension of the manga and deleted all past tweets regarding the artist:

Thank you for your continued support of our publication.

We sincerely apologize for causing concern and inconvenience to all parties involved in our ongoing manga adaptation project due to past social media posts of the artist in charge of the artwork.

Following discussions with all parties involved, we have decided to dissolve this project.

We sincerely apologize to the original author, rights holders, and fans who were looking forward to the work for the great inconvenience we have caused.

We at our company take this matter very seriously and will thoroughly reinforce compliance awareness in our future production and operations, as well as take measures to prevent recurrence.

Yamane has also issued an apology and a statement:

To all the fans and everyone involved who have supported us.

I sincerely apologize for causing discomfort and concern to many people due to the content of my past social media posts.

My remarks were thoughtless due to my own immaturity and I take your criticisms to heart and deeply regret them.

Furthermore, following discussions with all parties involved, we have decided to withdraw from the ongoing comic adaptation project. We sincerely apologize again for the great inconvenience caused to our readers who were looking forward to the work, the original author, the rights holders, and publishers.

From now on, I will take greater responsibility for my words and change my behavior.

It is unclear whether the manga adaptation is canceled or if the team is looking for another artist to take the helm.

The Husky and His White Cat Shizun is a danmei novel series written by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou (Meatbun) and follows the entangled lives of Mo Ran and his shizun Chu Wanning. After the violent and volatile emperor Taxian-jun dies, he unexpectedly finds himself transported back to his 15-year-old self Mo Ran. Brimming with hatred for his cold-hearted shizun Chu Wanning, Mo Ran vows to make it his mission to make Chu Wanning’s life a misery. However, much to his distress and despite his attempts of ignoring it, Mo Ran can’t help but see his shizun’s actions and expressions in a different light and see that his aloof catlike shizun may not be as cold and cruel as he appears.

It has been difficult for the danmei to get any other adaptation. A live-action adaptation had been announced with 50 episodes lined up to air but has never actually made it out of the production basement. A manhua adaptation was also announced and had a few episodes but has been on indefinite hiatus and has had numerous artist changes. A narrated audio drama adaptation was released in 2024 for a total of 610 episodes.
