The Apothecary Diaries has released its opening and ending theme song music video for Season 3.
The opening, “Kumo o Nuke Kazashimo e Watashi dake” which translates to “Beyond the Clouds, Only Me Downwind” is bluesy and features what sounds like an erhu playing in the background. Yorushika performed the song. The opening features watercolor paintings of the three princess, Jinshi with a large scar on his face, a snake biting a flower bud, a roaring lion, and the moon that Maomao reaches out and caresses.
The ending theme song, “AIYOU,” features the familiar vocals of EVE. This ending theme song is slower and relaxed and features more black-and-white illustrations. Maomao examines the moon-and-flower pin a few times before she places it back in the box.
Hyuganatsu first published the light novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro in October 2021 before it was acquired and published under Shufunotomo’s imprint Ray Books. The series was rereleased as a light novel under Shufunotomo’s other imprint Hero Bunko. The Apothecary Diaries was adapted into a manga with Nekokurage illustrating. A second manga adaptation was released in August 2017, titled The Apothecary Diaries: Maomao’s Notes on the Inner Palace. Recently, a live-action adaptation was announced with Mana Ashida to star as Maomao; the series will air in 2028.
OLM and Toho Animation Studio produced the anime adaptation. Season 1 released on Oct. 21, 2023 with a special three-episode premiere, Aoi Yūki voicing Maomao and and Takeo Ōtsuka voicing Jinshi. Season 2 aired from January to July 2025. An original film will premiere on December 11.
