The upcoming animated feature film To You in the Beyond has unveiled its official main trailer and key visual ahead of its release in theaters in Japan on October 9, 2026. Four additional cast members have also been announced.
Based on the acclaimed coming-of-age novel by Akiko Abe, published under Shueisha Orange Bunko, the film blends youthful romance, mystery, and fantasy. Abe won the 22nd Honya Taisho (Japan Booksellers’ Award) in 2025 for her novel Cafuné, and her latest work has become a breakout hit among young readers through social media.
Set on the remote island of Tokishima, the film follows high school student Kazuki Tsukigase, who carries a painful secret, and Nanao, a mysterious girl who suddenly appears after collapsing on the beach—claiming to have traveled from 1974. As their unlikely encounter unfolds, the mysteries surrounding the “Spirited Away Cove,” an unspeakable secret, and the island itself gradually become connected.
The official main trailer opens with protagonist Kazuki (voiced by Hiiro Ishibashi) recalling: “The summer I was fifteen, I met a mysterious girl.” Fleeting summer moments—walking along the seawall, sharing ice cream, slowly opening their hearts—are accompanied by Tota’s warm yet bittersweet theme song, “Olive.”
The trailer shifts into darker territory, revealing “An Untold Past,” “Scars That Never Fade,” and “The Hidden Truth.” It culminates in Kazuki’s heartbreaking plea: “Stay with me! Smile beside me… just 100 more times!”
The key visual, an original illustration by character designer and chief animation director Hechima, captures Kazuki playing a grand piano at the water’s edge on the shores of Tokishima, with Nanao standing nearby in a flowing white dress as the ocean breeze passes by. The sunset-lit cove symbolizes the intersection of Nanao’s secret from another era and Kazuki’s loneliness in the present.
Four acclaimed voice actors have joined the cast:
- Sumire Uesaka as Tamaki Mishima, a bright, popular honor student
- Wataru Hatano as Shuji Aiba, an easygoing and sincere boy raised on the island
- Nobuhiko Okamoto as Akimitsu Yano, a close friend whose lively personality brings warmth
- Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Yoshiki Suka, a classmate who openly antagonizes Kazuki
They join previously announced cast members Hiiro Ishibashi, Anna Nagase, and Shimba Tsuchiya.
