After Korean business news outlets leaked the news first, Tapas has finally made its official announcement about its closure.
Posted on October 1 on the front page of their website, Tapas announced that its platform would be closing on March 31, 2027. “After more than a decade, the very difficult decision to wind down the Tapas platform has been made,” the notice read. “We know this news may come as a surprise to the Tapas community, and we understand that this is a significant change for the readers, creators, and partners who have been part of Tapas over the years.” The notice was short and ended with the platform thanking creators for “trusting us with their stories” and readers for “supporting those stories and helping them reach new audiences.”
“The countless stories, connections, and communities built here will always be an important part of Tapas.”

The Tapas closure was a shock to everyone as reportedly, Kakao Entertainment did not tell the Tapas staff beforehand about the end of service. This resulted in readers, staff, and creators scrambling to get answers. Kakao Entertainment eventually gave an official announcement on the consolidation of KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon and closure of its US webcomics acquisition, but it wasn’t until October 1 that Tapas could give out any answers.
Questions arose from both readers and creators alike. For readers, those revolved around their currencies known as Ink and their libraries; for creators, they needed answers on the fate of their works. In response to those questions, Tapas has created an FAQ post which will be updated “as additional information becomes available” as the platform “may not have answers to every question at this time.”
Here are the important considerations for readers:
- Users will not be able to access unlocked content in their library as of March 31
- Content unlocked on Tapas cannot be transferred to another Kakao service/platform
- Events and sales have ceased
- Users can continue to use their unspent ink to unlock episodes until March 31. The Ink Shop (where users buy Ink) is closed as of October 1
- Users cannot get a refund for their Ink or unlocked content
Here are the important considerations for creators:
- Creators’ titles will remain on Tapas until March 31 unless removed earlier
- Creators can continue publishing new material until otherwise stated
- Creators who choose to remove their title from Tapas prior to March 31 will need to fill out the Tapas Creator Inquiry Form
- Readers will be able to continue supporting creators via Ink and the Support Program until March 31
This article will be updated with new additional information as provided by Tapas.
