Manga Mavericks has one more license announcement before Anime Expo begins.

The publisher announced the license acquisition of the manga Brothers of Japan, written and illustrated by Taiyo Matsumoto. The collection will have a physical print and digital release, set to release early next year. Brothers of Japan collects 11 short stories written by Matsumoto in his 20s. Brothers of Japan was first released in 1995 in Mag Comics. Dan Luffey translated the collection with @/CoyboyBeboy lettering and @/Dobu_Dobu editing. @/ucuushelf designed the logo and cover.

Matsumoto, known for his experimental art style and genre-blending storytelling, has won numerous awards including the Eisner Award in 2008, 2020, and 2025 for Tekkonkinkreet, Cats of the Louvre, and Tokyo These Days, respectively. The 2006 work Takemitsuzamurai won the Manga Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. His most recent work is Nanbanjin that he’s collaborating with Cyril Pedrosa.

The creator wrote a note in celebration of the license announcement:

I’m very happy that English speakers will now be able to read Brothers of Japan.

As I drew this when I was in my 20s, it contains a lot of my own immaturity, which is embarrassing. But at the same time, it also contains soft and painful expressions that only young people can draw, and I’m fond of it.

I hope you all enjoy it as well.

Manga Mavericks describes Brothers of Japan as below:

Created back when Taiyo Matsumoto was in his 20’s, this never-before-released collection contains 11 stories that embody the foundational cornerstones of Taiyo Matsumoto’s artistic universe.

The titular short story centers on two brothers who dig a hole in their dreams to reach the other side of the world.

Fans can expect to see Brothers of Japan release in print and digital in February 2027.
