Kura Sushi Ends Chiikawa Collaboration Early Following Employee Misconduct

Kura Sushi has abruptly ended its Chiikawa collaboration event, bringing it to a halt on September 6 (Japan time)—earlier than originally planned.

The sushi chain announced the decision was “due to the discovery of misconduct by an employee,” though they chose not to disclose the specific nature of the alleged misconduct.

Despite Kura’s tight-lipped stance, the internet was quick to uncover the truth. According to online sleuths, the problem allegedly involved a staff member stealing prizes and reselling them on second-hand markets. Some users even uncovered the account being used to resell the stolen goods.

Unfortunately, this very un-Chiikawa-like behavior has affected fans who were eagerly looking forward to the Kura x Chiikawa prizes. The collaboration, which began in Japan following the release of The Secret of the Mermaid Island, was expected to run longer—but the misconduct forced an early end.

Fans who were hoping to collect Chiikawa prizes at Kura Sushi locations are out of luck. The chain has not indicated whether the event will resume or if any compensation will be offered to affected customers. For now, the collaboration is officially over.
