One of the most popular webnovels has inspired a webcomic that is already making waves.
Got Dropped Into a Ghost Story, Still Gotta Work, the unofficial English translation of 괴담에 떨어져도 출근을 해야 하는구나 has been adapted into a webcomic which was a long time coming considering the popularity of the original novel. The manhwa debuted on June 5 with 20 episodes and is handled by Carrot Studio and Ssyungnyung illustrating the artwork. Ssyungnyung previously worked on I Failed to Oust the Villain. The manhwa surpassed six million views just a day after its release. As of this article’s publishing, the manhwa has surpassed million views.
The webnovel’s popularity can be seen through its view count and rankings with it landing on top of the list in the 2025 annual rankings of all genres on Kakaopage and over 370 million and counting views since its serialization in October 2024. Just three months after its debut, the webnovel accumulated more than 100 million views and has consistently sold out on merch in popup shops and exhibitions.
The webnovel follows a young man who transmigrates into a ghost story. Despite falling into a ghost story, Kim Soleum still has to work and as a rookie at a huge and famous conglomerate, he’s tasked to solve mysteries and urban legends, but as a passionate horror and ghost story enthusiast, he makes quick work of it.
Writer Baek Deok-soo expressed excitement over the manhwa adaptation. Loosely translated, the writer believed that a manhwa adaptation would leave a different and unique impression on readers and was looking forward to experiencing the story again but in a new medium. They wished the production team good health as they worked on the manhwa.
Artist Ssungnyung has been a fan of the original webnovel and was looking forward to working on the manhwa. She and the production team paid close attention “to visual direction and details so the tension and immersion of the work can be felt even more vividly.”
Unfortunately, there’s still much work to be done. Got Dropped Into a Ghost Story, Still Gotta Work has no English translation yet so readers will have to exercise some patience to read both the webnovel and manhwa. Fans can read Baek’s Debut or Die! webnovel and the webcomic adaptation on Tapas.
