Fool Night brings two of the most artistically creative animation studios together.
Netflix announced the anime adaptation of Fool Night, the manga that scored numerous nominations. The official teaser introduces the protagonist Toshiro Kamiya walking through a filthy alleyway, depressed, and wondering why he’s the only one who always suffers. That’s the only dialogue that’s spoken in the entire teaser as it uses an emotional soundtrack to accompany the visuals of Toshiro struggling to make ends meet to pay for his sick mother’s medication before deciding to undergo a procedure that will change his life and outlook.
Along with the teaser trailer, Netflix also released the poster as well as other key visuals which can be seen below.
Atsushi Yukawa will direct the series with Jin Tanaka as the series composition writer. Yota Tsuruoka will be the sound director with Tatsuya Kato composing the music. Robert Sato will design the characters.
The voice viewers heard would be a familiar one for many anime fans. Koki Uchiyama (My Hero Academia, Haikyuu!!, and Oshi no Ko Season 2) will take on the leading role of Toshiro Kamiya. Minako Kotobuki (Tower of God Season 2, Sparks of Tomorrow, and Sound! Euphonium 3) will portray Yomiko Horai, Toshiro’s friend who helps him turn into a plant.
Known for its avante-garde cinematography, Shaft has animated and produced Monogatari, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and March Comes In Like a Lion. Sunrise has animated and produced numerous critically acclaimed series including the Gundam series, Inuyasha, Code Geass, and City Hunter.

Ready to give his body up for a payday, Kamiya is about to explore the limits of society’s waning humanity.
Fool Night debuted in Big Comic Superior on November 13, 2020 and currently has 12 volumes published in Japan with the 13th releasing on June 30. The series was nominated in the print manga category at the Next Manga Award in 2020 and won best suspense manga at the Japan Expo Awards in 2023.
Fool Night will launch on Netflix later this year. The manga is available to read on Viz.
