Comico, the webcomics platform in Japan, has announced its closure.
The platform revealed that January 6, 2027 will be its last day of operation. A reason for its closure was not disclosed at the time of its announcement, although they have stated they will be turning their focus on manga editing and production. Although fans will no longer be able to read their favorite comics on Comico any longer, Comico has revealed that purchased works can still be viewed at their online bookstore called Mecha Comic.
There will not be any new works released on Comico as of August 31, and no new episodes will be available to rent. Users will also not be able to submit new works or episodes for their challenge entries. On September 28, users will no longer be able to purchase tickets or rent works.
According to Oricon, Comico will use their experiences planning, editing, and producing webcomics to create more manga. As a company with a “writers first” mindset, the editorial department at Comico is dedicated to valuing the individuality and strengths of each writer and is committed to working closely with the writer. The company also plans to continue production of their current serialized works and publish it through different platforms and work on global expansion so overseas readers can also access the works.
Comico, part of NHN Japan Corporation, launched in 2013 with its English platform, Pocket Comics, launching in 2020. Pocket Comics didn’t last long as it, along with Comico’s French and Korean counterparts, shut down in October 2025, citing “business reasons” for its termination, saying that it tried to stay open.
NHN Corporation cited the closure of its overseas platforms to “improve operational efficiency and profitability in the webtoon business,” and would concentrate on Comico service in Japan and look to expanding collaborations with other major domestic and international platforms.
Comico’s services will be terminated on January 6, 2027.
