AX 2026: The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All Drops Teaser, Nirvana’s “Breed” as Opening Song

Listen. Crunchyroll really pulled out all the stops at their industry panel.

Crunchyroll revealed the first key visual and teaser for the upcoming and much anticipated and anime adaptation of the MUCH beloved GL manga The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All, or as the fans affectionately call it, green yuri. The quiet thrum of the guitar strings that instantly change into the iconic chords of Nirvana’s “Breed” begin the teaser trailer with a quick glimpse of Aya and Mitsuki. Because yeah, that’s right. Nirvana’s “Breed” is going to be the opening theme song for the anime.

Crunchyroll also showed an interview clip between drummer Dave Grohl and mangaka Sumiko Arai. The two were all smiles as they spoke about the anime adaptation. Grohl also said that Kurt Cobain, the frontman who died in 1994, “definitely would have loved [The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All]. This is the same message and aesthetic… the vibe, you know? It’s cool.” After checking the list of songs and nodding his approval with constant praise like “Amazing,” “Killer,” “Oh my god, these are amazing!”, he ended with the ultimate compliment to Arai: “Wow, you have really good taste in music.”

The green yuri manga was first posted on the mangaka’s X, formerly known as Twitter, account on April 10, 2022. The story also became serialized on Pixiv Comic on April 29, 2023 with Kadokawa Shoten publishing the series in print as well. The manga won “Best Web Manga” at the Next Manga Awards in 2023 and “Best New Manga” in 2025. It also received a nomination for “Best Manga” at the Harvey Awards in 2025.

CloverWorks will animate and produce the adaptation with Masashi Ishihama directing the adaptation. Rino Yamasaki will oversee the series composition with Kanna Hirayama designing the characters. Mariya Ise will voice Mitsuki with Akari Kito voicing Aya.

Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya loves listening to rock, but no one else seems to share her interest…until she meets a cool, stylish employee at a CD shop. Dressed in black from head to toe, he has this air of mystery about him, and his taste in music is impeccable. Aya falls hard for him—not knowing her crush is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! For her part, Mitsuki generally keeps to herself and avoids standing out at school. But given that she sits right next to Aya, Mitsuki’s all too aware of the other girl’s feelings, and she’s afraid to reveal the truth. So why does she find herself talking with Aya more and more…?

The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All comes out in January 2027 and Crunchyroll will stream the series. Yen Press holds the print license for the manga.
