AX 2026: Bandai Namco Brings Echoes of Aincrad and New SAO Anime to Anime Expo 2026

Bandai Namco is bringing Sword Art Online fans a double dose of news at Anime Expo 2026: a special preview of the upcoming action RPG Echoes of Aincrad, plus the U.S. first look at a new promotional anime, Unanswered//butterfly.

The panel, “Bandai Namco Presents: Echoes from Aincrad – An Unanswered//butterfly U.S. First Look Preview,” takes place Thursday, July 2 at 12:30 PM in the JW Diamond at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Game Producer Yosuke Futami will be joined by Masami Niwa (SAO anime producer) and Bryce Papenbrook (English voice of Kirito).

Attendees will receive exclusive giveaways and be among the first to see a teaser for Unanswered//butterfly.

Echoes of Aincrad is an action RPG developed by Game Studio Inc. that breaks franchise tradition by putting players in the role of a custom-created protagonist, rather than Kirito. Set in the iconic floating castle of Aincrad, players enter the death game where perishing in the virtual world means dying in reality.

Combat focuses on building synergy with NPC partners, who have unique skills and abilities that strengthen as your bond deepens. The game also features an optional “Death Game” mode that deletes your save file if you die even once.

The game launches July 10, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Included with the Ultimate Edition is Unanswered//butterfly, a 110-minute promotional anime movie produced by Polygon Pictures . Directed by Tadahiro “Tady” Yoshihira with character designs by abec and story by Reki Kawahara, it follows two original characters—Emirun and Rex—as they pursue Kirito, who is depicted as a PK (player killer).

Producer Yosuke Futami explained the shift in perspective: “From the viewpoint of new characters, what does Kirito look like?” . The result is a unique take on Aincrad’s death game told from the eyes of ordinary players .

For SAO fans, this panel is essential. A fresh look at a game that lets you create your own protagonist, a 110-minute anime that recontextualizes Kirito as an antagonist, and giveaways—all in one room. Don’t miss it.

Anime Expo runs July 2–5 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The panel is July 2 at 12:30 PM in JW Diamond.
