We Are Aliens is racking up the awards.

The anime film won “Best Animated Feature Film” in the Anima’t section at the SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia in Spain this year. Director Kohei Kadowaki is the youngest Japanese director to have won this honor at age 30.

Ryota Bando voices Tsubasa. Amane Okayama voices Gyotaro. Ten Yamasaki portrays Konatsu. Kemuri Matsui voices Batahara. Gaku Sano portrays Seiya Toda. Arisa Sasaki and Edo Harumi voices Elmo Matsushita and the calligraphy teacher, respectively.

Co-produced by Nothing New and French studio Miyu Production, We Are Aliens was also written by the director. Yaffle composed the music with Adieu performing the theme song “Sasakure” which translates to “Split.”

The story is described as below:

In a rural town during the Heisei era, two boys meet.

Tsubasa, who struggles with being “ordinary,” and Akitaro, who is seen as “special.”

As subtle distortions begin to creep into their everyday lives, an irreversible incident changes their relationship forever.

Is this a story of youth?

Or a memory that should never be revisited?

The film won the Grand Prize for Animated Feature at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in Canada and was also selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

We Are Aliens released in theaters on September 25.
