Princess Ai will potentially be getting revived in a Kickstarter project.
TOKYOPOP is launching their first Kickstarter project and it’ll be for Princess Ai. This original manga was first published by TOKYOPOP between 2004 and 2006 with a sequel called Princess Ai: The Prism of Midnight Dawn published in 2008 and 2010. In 2011, the publisher ceased operations in the U.S. for a time before relaunching in December 2012. However, many of its previous licenses have either been revived by other publishers or been put in a hiatus.
Princess Ai is a manga created by Courtney Love and D.J. Milky, the pen name of TOKYOPOP’s founder Stu Levy, and loosely adapts Love’s life story with the protagonist being her fantasy alter ego. Princess Ai was written and illustrated by Misaho Kujiradou with character designs by Ai Yazawa.
TOKYOPOP describes Princess Ai in Kickstarter:
Manga meets rock-and-roll romance in Princess Ai, a shoujo series about a rebellious fallen angel finding her voice and memory through love, music, and self-discovery. Now 20 years after the original trilogy concluded, TOKYOPOP’s iconic rock fantasy manga returns!
Co-created by Courtney Love and D.J. Milky, with original character designs by Ai Yazawa and art by Misaho Kujiradou, Princess Ai was the first manga project created between Japan and the US, and helped define a generation of manga fandom with its unforgettable blend of music, romance, rebellion, and fantasy.
Lost in the neon streets of Shinjuku with only a heart-shaped box, a hypnotic voice, and fragments of a destiny she could not yet understand, Ai became a rock star, an icon, and a princess caught between love, rebellion, and two worlds at war.
The Kickstarter promises to have new collector editions, exclusive add-ons, rare vault material releases, and more. The Kickstarter launches in early 2027.
