REVIEW: The One. Later On… Is a Feel-Good Harem Adventure with Genuine Heart

The One. Later on...

This review is for The One. Later On…, Volume 1, by Sonomono Nochini. Titan Manga provided a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.

The story strikes a fun balance between over-the-top power, romantic chaos, and genuine emotional moments, making it an effortless feel-good read.

An epic tale of heartbreak, strength, and adventure—follow a young man’s journey of self-discovery as he returns to a world that has moved on, facing new challenges, deep emotions, and unexpected bonds.

Wazu’s life was forever changed when he was rejected by the hero’s party and forced to leave his hometown. Once a weak, ordinary boy, he spent two years training alone in the mountains to prove his worth. Now, stronger and determined, Wazu returns to a world that has moved on—only to find his childhood friend, Aria, engaged to the hero who once mocked him. Heartbroken, Wazu embarks on a new journey, facing misunderstandings, new relationships, and the challenge of finding his place in a world that has changed.

Written by Nahato and beautifully illustrated by Nariie Shinichirou, The One. Later On… blends action, romance, and adventure. As Wazu’s story unfolds, readers are taken through a rollercoaster of emotions—ranging from the pain of unrequited love to the thrill of discovering new bonds.
With strong character development and captivating world-building, The One. Later On… promises an unforgettable journey of self-discovery and the pursuit of happiness.
Perfect for lovers of heartwarming fantasy stories with deep emotional stakes.

Waz begins the story by saving Sienna, a cute little elf child, from an S-rank monster. Sarona, an older (but not old) elf, immediately suspects Waz has impure intentions—but Sienna defends him, and Waz ends up accompanying them back to their village. We quickly learn Waz is impervious to poison (at least in fruit form) and has a very specific goal: building a harem. This goal, as it turns out, stems directly from a devastating heartbreak.

Sarona, naturally suspicious, goes through Waz’s belongings while he sleeps. She discovers he’s an adventurer, though most of his information is locked behind a paywall of sorts. The next day, she’s challenged by a disgruntled evil elf named Gazna, who desires her leadership role. Spoiler: Gazna is no match for the plot armor protecting Waz. During the battle, Waz reveals he’s attracted to Sarona—so yes, you can guess where this is heading.

Afterward, Waz ends up leaving in a hurry, forgetting his guild card. It’s then that the guild card itself (yes, it talks) shares his backstory with Sarona. Waz had expected to marry his childhood friend Aria, but she was chosen as a Saint to accompany the Hero on a quest. Upon their return a year later, Waz learns that promises don’t mean much when the Hero requests to marry Aria—and his wish is granted. Heartbroken, Waz leaves his village on a quest for growth and, well, a harem.

But here’s where things get interesting. As a weak nobody, Waz finds himself on the brink of death before being saved by Meru, the world’s cutest little baby puff dragon. (Seriously. The cutest.) Meru becomes his first wife, per se, and the first member of his harem.

This story will feel familiar to anyone who’s read Solo Leveling or similar overpowered male lead comics. Waz has impenetrable plot armor. There’s a harem that naturally appeals to the male demographic. But here’s the difference: as of Volume 1, Waz isn’t lecherous. He holds genuine interest and care for the women around him. The emotional moments add necessary gravity to an otherwise fun story, making it an overall feel-good read rather than a guilty pleasure.

At $12.99, this manga is on par with titles of similar length. I appreciated how the cliffhanger at the end of the volume was handled, and Titan Manga continues to impress with their cover designs. I don’t have any critiques—just a genuine recommendation.

If you enjoy titles like Leveling Up into the FutureThe One. Later On… deserves a spot on your shelf. It’s heartfelt, funny, and surprisingly earnest about its own absurd premise. Plus, Meru. Did I mention Meru?

The One. Later On… publishes on June 16, 2026, from Titan Manga, and is available to order wherever books are sold, including Books-a-Million (UK & Europe), Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.
