It’s time to catch ’em all again.
Announced at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, Pokémon: Wild Card will be the first Pokémon theatrical film since Secrets of the Jungle which was released in Japan in December 2020 and on Netflix worldwide in October 2021. This will be the first film to focus on the trading card game as the protagonist is a Pokémon Trading Card Game player and their partner Mimikyu. The partner wears a yellow card with the hood up and headphones over their head, coincidentally or not mimicking Mimikyu. The teaser opens with the silhouette of Mimikyu catching the light from the Pokémon card before ending with the player about to make a move before abruptly looking up.
CloverWorks Studio (Spy x Family and Bocchi the Rock) will animate the film. Katsuhiko Kitada (Attack on Titan and The First Slam Dunk) will direct the film with Akemi Hayashi (Banana Fish and Lazarus) handling the character design.
The first Pokémon film was released in 1998 which was called Pokémon: The First Movie which focused on Ash meeting Mewtwo. Since then, there have been 22 other films starring Ash, Pikachu, and his friends. The last film that was shown in theaters worldwide was in 2018 which was the Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us which centered trainers and their Pokémon partners working to stop a forest fire and a poisonous spore.
Pokémon: Wild Card will release in 2027. More information will be posted as soon as it is out.
