The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All has unleashed its first trailer and begins with Aya saying, “I used to think music is something to listen to alone.” Aya frequents a CD shop and is instantly infatuated by one of the employees there, a guy who’s dressed all in black. What she doesn’t know is that her crush isn’t a guy at all, but a girl–and it’s a girl she knows very well. The two girls are flustered with each other, but gradually grow closer over their shared love of rock music.
The green yuri manga was first posted on the mangaka’s X, formerly known as Twitter, account on April 10, 2022. The story also became serialized on Pixiv Comic on April 29, 2023 with Kadokawa Shoten publishing the series in print as well. The manga won “Best Web Manga” at the Next Manga Awards in 2023 and “Best New Manga” in 2025. It also received a nomination for “Best Manga” at the Harvey Awards in 2025.
CloverWorks will animate and produce the adaptation with Masashi Ishihama directing the adaptation. Rino Yamasaki will oversee the series composition with Kanna Hirayama designing the characters. Mariya Ise will voice Mitsuki with Akari Kito voicing Aya.

Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya loves listening to rock, but no one else seems to share her interest…until she meets a cool, stylish employee at a CD shop. Dressed in black from head to toe, he has this air of mystery about him, and his taste in music is impeccable. Aya falls hard for him—not knowing her crush is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! For her part, Mitsuki generally keeps to herself and avoids standing out at school. But given that she sits right next to Aya, Mitsuki’s all too aware of the other girl’s feelings, and she’s afraid to reveal the truth. So why does she find herself talking with Aya more and more…?
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy At All comes out in January 2027 and Crunchyroll will stream the series. Yen Press holds the print license for the manga.
