Marvel will be partnering with WEBTOON for a new app.
Marvel has announced that they will be launching a new Marvel Comics app on November 16. The app will have a library of current and classic comics from Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century Studios as well as stories from Disney. The Marvel Comics app was designed with WEBTOON’s support and is meant “to make comic discovery faster, reading more flexible, and ongoing series easier to follow.” That includes archived comics, current comic book runs, and fans can read both traditional page-based comics and vertical scrolling comics.
The app will have a dynamic cover-scroll interface that users can browse through various comics at a glance or it can be personalized based on their reading history and interests. Marvel Comics app will also have character and creator pages, Pull List surfaces for new issues from whatever series, characters, and creators a user follows so that they get the updates as soon as possible. Users can add selections from the Upcoming Releases to the Pull List so they get notified as soon as a new story drops.
David Abdo, General Manager at Marvel Comics and Franchise, said, “We know that there is a large audience of readers who are looking to experience comics digitally, and there is no richer library than Marvel Comics.”
Yongsoo Kim, President of WEBTOON Entertainment, said, “By combining WEBTOON’s expertise in building digital comics platforms with Marvel’s unparalleled storytelling legacy, we’re making it easier for longtime fans and new readers alike to explore Marvel’s universe and discover their next favorite story.”
The existing online service app, Marvel Unlimited, will sunset on December 7. However, Marvel Unlimited members can import their existing library to the Marvel Comics app when the latter launches on November 16 and when users create an account with WEBTOON.
Some important dates for Marvel Unlimited users:
- October 5: no longer accepting new sign-ups
- Existing members as of October 5 will still be able to access their library free of charge until December 7
- November 16: all active Marvel Unlimited subscribers will be eligible for an automated, prorated refund for the remainder of their unused subscription
- December 7: last day for new content added and last day for users to read comics on the app
- December 21: the users’ last day to browse their library
- December 28: removal and sunset of Marvel Unlimited App
The app will have two subscription tiers:
Base tier
- $9.99/month plus tax or $69.99/year plus tax
- Access to full Marvel Comics digital library along with latest issues available three months after print release
Ultimate tier
- $12.49/month plus tax or $99.99/year plus tax
- Access to full Marvel Comics digital library along with latest issues available 30 days after print release
Those who attend New York Comic Con will be able to get an early look at the beta version of the app from October 8 to 11. Fans can also pre-register and claim a limited-time founding member price of the annual price of $59.99 plus tax for the Ultimate tier.
