Kyoto Animation’s upcoming series Sparks of Tomorrow has unveiled its musical lineup—and both opening and ending theme artists are making their anime debut.
The opening theme “Eureka Evrika” by Luna Goami drops July 6, followed by the ending theme “Soarin'” from indie-pop artist Ginger Root on July 13, across all major streaming platforms.
The Artists
Luna Goami is no stranger to anime fans—she’s provided vocals for The Apothecary Diaries and the film Last Mile. For “Eureka Evrika,” she wrote the lyrics while Hitomi Koto (who also handles the series’ soundtrack) composed the track. Goami shared: “I immersed myself in the background materials and the script, letting Hitomi Koto’s soundscapes and the director’s vision guide my creative process. The song itself is vibrant and wondrous, yet driven by a powerful momentum”.
California indie-pop artist Ginger Root, whose breakout track “Loretta” has amassed over 48 million streams, wrote, composed, and arranged “Soarin'” entirely himself. He explained: “Flying through the sky is something regular humans can’t actually do, right? But if you push yourself as hard as you can, don’t you feel like it’s within reach? Inspired by the themes of the anime, I chose this title to capture that exact feeling.”
The Series
Sparks of Tomorrow premieres July 5 on Netflix worldwide and on Japanese television. Set in an alternate-history early 20th-century Kyoto where steam power reigns supreme, the series follows a boy obsessed with the “age of electricity” and a girl living with the memory of her late mother. It adapts Hiro Yuki’s novel 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku, which won an honorable mention at the Kyoto Animation Awards in 2017.
The production team includes director Minoru Ota (making his directorial debut), series composer Tatsuhiko Urahata, and character designer Kohei Okamura. The cast features Yuma Uchida as Kihachi Sakamoto and Sora Amamiya as Inako Momokawa.
Two artists making their anime theme song debuts for a Kyoto Animation series with a unique historical setting? That’s worth paying attention to. Both “Eureka Evrika” and “Soarin'” are shaping up to be standout tracks of the summer season.
