Kuromi has been an artist, a fashion icon, and Sanrio’s reigning queen of mischief. Now, she’s adding “movie star” to her résumé.
On October 31—Kuromi’s birthday, naturally—Sanrio announced that the fan-favorite character will star in her very first feature film. The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release in Japan in 2027, with planning and distribution handled by GAGA Corporation. International release details will be announced as they’re confirmed.
Debuting in 2005, Kuromi is instantly recognizable by her black hood and pink skull. She looks like a troublemaker—and she is—but beneath that exterior beats the heart of a true romantic. She loves handsome guys, keeps a diary where she pours out her delicate feelings, and has built a devoted following among young women who appreciate her gap moe charm.
Her message is simple but powerful: “You can become whoever you want to be!” Through the #WorldKuromificationProject, she’s been spreading the idea that everyone deserves to become their best self.
The announcement came with a comment from Kuromi herself, though details about the film’s plot, staff, and cast remain under wraps. What we do know is that Kuromi has already conquered music, fashion, and merchandise—and now she’s setting her sights on the big screen.
For Kuromi fans, this is the news they’ve been waiting for. A full-length film starring Sanrio’s most lovable bad girl is exactly the kind of chaotic energy we need. The movie hits Japanese theaters in 2027. Stay tuned for more details—and start practicing your Kuromi pose now.
