Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are bringing Katsuhiro Otomo’s legendary cyberpunk masterpiece Akira back to North American theaters on September 4, 2026. The 2026 re-release will feature a 4K restoration with select IMAX screenings in the United States and Canada.
Originally released in 1988, the film will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles and an English dubbed version. The 124-minute sci-fi epic follows biker Kaneda as he tries to save his friend Tetsuo, who gains devastating psychic abilities in a dystopian Neo-Tokyo. Tickets are now on sale for the limited theatrical run.
