Yuri!!! on ICE might not have its second season (yes, we’re still salty) but at least Crunchyroll is doing something to soften the blow.
The streaming platform put all 12 episodes of the hit original figure skating anime on its channel to celebrate the show’s 10th anniversary. The stream premiered on July 25 and will be available for 30 days. Yuri!!! on ICE is available in its original Japanese form, and English, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, and Telulgu dubs. It also has Arabic, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (Latin American), and Spanish (Spain) subtitles. English subtitles are only available in its automated format.
Yuri!!! on ICE premiered in October 2016 and was one of MAPPA’s earlier original anime. Created by Sayo Yamamoto and Mitsuro Kubo, Yuri!!! on ICE follows a Japanese figure skater named Yuri Katsuki who decides to quit the sport after falling to dead last in the Grand Prix Final. He gets the surprise of a lifetime when he returns home and finds celebrated world champion Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov at his family’s onsen in Japan where he declares that he’ll be taking over as Yuri’s coach.
The series spanned 12 episodes and one OVA, and became a resounding success with praise raining down on the storyline and character development, especially focusing on the same-sex relationship between Yuri and Victor and highlighting Yuri’s anxiety in a respectful way. Figure skaters also complimented the anime for its accuracy.
Yuri!!! on ICE swept the Crunchyroll Awards, including “Best Animation,” “Best Opening, ” “Best Ending,” and “Anime of the Year.” Dean Fujioka’s opening “History Maker” won “Best Anime Opening” at the IGN Awards and Aniem Grand Prix.
The popularity of the series led to the announcement of a movie called Ice Adolescence that was first announced in April 2017 and was supposed to release in 2019 but experienced multiple delays. A teaser trailer was released in January 2019 in Japan that featured a young Victor skating to center ice at the Winter Olympic Games. Unfortunately, despite its enduring popularity and the fans’ widespread love, MAPPA announced that Ice Adolescence had been canceled.
