Hatsune Miku is crossing borders—literally.
Japanese media company Dwango has partnered with Nebula17 to launch BEYOND BORDERs, a global initiative supported by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs that aims to expand Vocaloid culture beyond Japan and introduce it to new audiences worldwide. The project pairs top Japanese Vocaloid producers with leading U.S. songwriters and producers to create new music featuring Hatsune Miku as the main vocalist.
Fans attending Anime Expo will get to hear these new songs first. JAPAN MUSIC VOCALOID, a free concert on July 4 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. PT at The Novo in Los Angeles, will feature performances by Vocaloid producers:
- kz (livetune)
- SatapanP
- Hachioji-P
- picco
Special guest appearance by DJ and producer TeddyLoid (known for the 2014 hit “ME!ME!ME!”).

The project brings together an impressive cross-section of Japanese and Western talent:
Japanese Vocaloid Producers:
- SatapanP – Surpassed 1 million YouTube subscribers within two years of debut
- picco – Creates “Hyper kawaii Music”
- jon-YAKITORY – His 2024 release “Chaos Boogie” surpassed 98 million YouTube views
Western Producers/Songwriters:
- Charles “Scootie” Anderson – Grammy-winning producer and member of Social House (Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next,” “7 Rings”)
- Grant Boutin – Worked on Tate McRae’s “So Close to What”
- Byrd – Grammy-winning producer behind Bad Bunny’s “Yonaguni” and the Grammy-winning album Un Verano Sin Ti
- Cecile Believe – Co-writer and lead vocalist on Sophie’s Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides
- Xansei – Known for producing XG’s “Shooting Star”
The BEYOND BORDERs project will roll out throughout summer 2026 with a series of collaborative singles, culminating in the release of an EP in fall 2026.
Vocaloid has been a global phenomenon for over a decade, but this project marks one of the most ambitious attempts to bridge the genre with mainstream Western pop production. Seeing Hatsune Miku alongside producers who’ve worked with Ariana Grande, Bad Bunny, and Sophie is genuinely exciting—and the free concert at The Novo on July 4 is the place to hear it first.
Anime Expo runs July 2–5 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Novo concert is free and open to the public. Don’t miss it.
