In what may be the strangest K-Pop headline of the year, an AI-generated girl group has announced that one of its virtual members is pregnant.
On Tuesday, BABYQUEEN—a five-member group styled as a South Korean girl group but entirely AI-generated—posted a statement to its official Xiaohongshu (RedNote) account. It was signed by member Mity, alongside a selfie of her wearing pink pajamas in bed.
“I’m pregnant. After much consideration and thorough discussions with the company and my bandmates, I have decided to temporarily leave the group to focus on rest and recovery,” the statement read.
The announcement came a day after the group posted a similar notice, asking followers not to “over-speculate about her private life.”
The post has drawn criticism for turning women’s reproductive health into entertainment, along with plenty of jokes and incredulity about the absurdity of the situation. After all, Mity is not a real person.
BABYQUEEN launched its Xiaohongshu account on September 7. The account, whose IP address is located in China’s Liaoning province, has roughly 1,000 followers. The group is part of a growing wave of AI girl group accounts proliferating on Chinese social media, with virtual idols maintaining accounts where they share glimpses of daily life and promote brand endorsements.
Whether this is a bizarre marketing stunt or a genuine attempt at virtual storytelling, the reaction has been swift and largely skeptical. For now, Mity is on “hiatus”—and the internet is left wondering what, exactly, an AI idol needs maternity leave from.
