Viz Changes Gojo’s Words in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 221 Amidst Fan Criticism
Say “no” no more as Viz Media has made a small but significant edit to Jujutsu Kaisen’s Gojo’s words in the final scene of Chapter 221.
SPOILERS: Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 221 “Gain and Loss” by Gege Akutami, available in English on Viz Media.
Gojo has expanded on his single word in Jujutsu Kaisen‘s final panel of Chapter 221 after an amendment from Viz Media.
On April 23, 2023, Viz Media released Chapter 221 of Jujutsu Kaisen where fans saw the long-awaited return (1189 days to be exact, according to Twitter user @/howlonginthebox) of Gojo Satoru after he had been sealed in the Prison Realm. While fans were excited to see the powerful sorcerer finally released, they were less than pleased to see Viz’s official translation of Gojo’s words in the last panel. In the original Japanese version, Gojo utters “勝つさ” which translates to “I’ll win.” However, Viz opted to translate it as “No,” when Kenjaku asked, “You don’t expect to lose?”
Some fans expressed their disappointment at the translation choice and even called Viz’s translations “lazy,” with many feeling the “No” did not convey Gojo’s determination and resolve. Furthermore, fans pointed out the original version was meant to directly reference a scene in Chapter 3 when Sukuna vows to kill Gojo when he makes Yuji’s body his own. Unperturbed, Gojo waves off Sukuna’s threat, saying it would be “an honor” for him to fight against the King of Curses. When asked by Yuji if he would lose against a Sukuna who has regained his full strength, Gojo replied, with full confidence, “Nah, I’d win.”
A day later, on April 24, Viz edited the translation of the final panel, changing it from “No” to “Nah, I’d win,” thus paralleling the conversation Gojo had with Yuji in the past. Viz Media has not released a statement regarding this change.
Chapter 222 of Jujutsu Kaisen will return on May 14, 2023 after a three-week break.
