A new era of Gundam is on the horizon.
Bandai Namco Filmworks officially announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO (pronounced “Alex Zero”) at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 . The series is scheduled for a 2027 release and serves as the centerpiece of the newly launched RG Project, a cross-media initiative spanning anime, video games, and more.
The series is set in a future where humanity’s prosperity came from three technologies—Gravity Control, Faster-Than-Light Communication, and Cognitive Materialization—delivered by an interstellar object. However, the object went rogue, spawning an aggressive, self-replicating silicon-based ecosystem called the “Apocalypse.” Forced to abandon Earth, humanity marked that year as A.A. (After Apocalypse) 1.
The story begins in A.A. 45, when a boy named Azumi Ray awakens on the lunar surface. He is a war orphan and the designated pilot of the Gundam ZERO, an experimental mobile suit developed to fight the Apocalypse.
The anime is set roughly 100 years before the events of the upcoming game Gundam Rogue Orbit, announced at Summer Game Fest. Together, they form the RG Project, sharing the same world while telling the story from different perspectives and time periods.
With a stacked creative team and a fresh universe, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is shaping up to be one of the franchise’s most ambitious projects. The 2027 release date marks a new chapter for the series as it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2029. Stay tuned for more updates.
