Right now at Popeyes Chicken, you can get the One Piece x Popeyes collab food. This includes the Luffy Bento Box, Gum-Gum Lemonade and Chopper’s Cupcake. Your favorite husband-and-wife food reviewers swung through the local Popeyes drive-thru to taste this delicious collab for ourselves.
ONE PIECE x POPEYES
Fortunately, our local Popeyes had all of the special food for this collab available. The main attraction is the Luffy Bento Box. You can either get this separately, or as the Luffy Bento Bundle, which also includes the Gum-Gum Lemonade and Chopper’s Cupcake.
The Luffy Bento Box has an excellent presentation. It comes in a cute box that is covered in characters and logos for One Piece. However, the food is pretty straightforward for Popeyes. It comes with two pieces of chicken and a side (we got Mac & Cheese and Mashed Potatoes, respectively). This is basically just a regular Popeyes meal with two pieces and a side dish. But if you enjoy Popeyes (and why wouldn’t you), that’s A-OK.
With the Luffy Bento Bundle (and also available separately), you get the Gum-Gum Lemonade. This is lemonade flavored with pineapple, blue raspberry and orange. It tastes like a very sweet, flavored lemonade. But, they did a good job with the branding on this as well, as having a lemonade flavored by One Piece’s integral Gum-Gum Fruit is a very cute idea.
Finally, and possibly the culinary coup-de-grace for the collab, is Chopper’s Cupcake. This is a small strawberry cupcake with pink strawberry frosting and round white sprinkles on top. This cupcake is also very sweet, but that works well with the salty flavors of your Popeyes meal. Plus, the frosting was especially delicious, and reminiscent of the kind they use on Baskin Robbins ice cream cakes.
A TASTY COLLAB
The very best fast food collabs not only have branded packaging, they also have unique menu options. Meanwhile, the best are often a half-hearted repackaging of standard menu offerings.
The One Piece x Popeyes collab falls between these two extremes. While the Luffy Bento Box doesn’t present any unique food options, the presentation is on point and importing the idea of the “Bento Box” is a cute addition. Meanwhile, both the Gum-Gum Lemonade and Chopper’s Cupcake are limited-time menu options (although neither of them possessed and unique One Piece-branded packaging).
Nevertheless, for around $15, this was a solid meal with some fun One Piece trappings. While a special collectable cup or some unique chicken flavors would have been a nice addition, we were not disappointed by our One Piece x Popeyes collab experience.
