Aka is a sweet little girl who loves sunny days and breakfast. (Mood.) She speaks with a slight lisp as she declares she’s going exploring on an “onigiwi campaign” while gazing at the cherry blossoms. Her world, however, is very small—she is not allowed to go beyond the windmill.
The town she lives in was built on steep, unforgiving cliffs, where danger is always nearby. Residents hung curtains to ward off disaster and misfortune from the outside world. But when Aka loses sight of the windmill, she finds the cherry blossoms anyway—and her adventure truly begins.
A Chance Encounter
During her exploration, Aka meets a LARGE black cat, revealed to be a god, who she shares her onigiri with. The cat saves her during her play, then follows her home with tear-filled eyes. She names him Kurocha.
Her grandfather Gino addresses the young woman who has been following Aka all day. She reveals herself to be Nodoka Daidai, a guardian of young leaves whose job is to provide education to preschool-age children. Daidai guides Aka, teaching her how to remember things by writing them down.
Together—Aka, Kurocha, and Daidai—go exploring to expand Aka’s world. Along the way, they meet Uran, a naughty little girl about Aka’s age. The four embark on Aka’s very first train ride, which both children are thrilled about. Aka and Uran become fast friends, with Uran seemingly protective of her new companion.
The Art and Heart
Writer Ollie Kaplan describes this manga as “a story about gratitude for the small things in life.” That rings true—Aka’s unrelentingly positive outlook makes every page feel warm and comforting.
Kozue Amano’s artwork is absolutely breathing, full of whimsy and magic that draws you into the story. Every panel feels alive, from the cherry blossoms swaying in the breeze to the expressive faces of Aka and her new friends.
Bottom Line
If you love stories full of whimsy and wonder, you’ll certainly love Colori Colore Creare. It’s a gentle, heartwarming read that reminds us to appreciate the small joys—breakfast, sunny days, and the friends we make along the way.
