Mo Dao Zu Shi Drops Ethereal Birthday Artwork for Lan Wangji, Manga Launch Date
Happy Birthday to Hanguang-Jun, Lan Er-gege, Lan Wangji!
1, 2, 3! Happy birthday to Mo Dao Zu Shi‘s Lan Wangji!
On Jan. 23, the day of Lan Wangji’s birthday, the official Weibo account for the donghua series of Mo Dao Zu Shi dropped a gorgeous and breathtaking artwork of the second young master of the Gusu Lan sect. Surrounded by blue monarchs, Lan Wangji holds Bichen in one hand as he gazes to the front. One particularly striking butterfly flies close to his face.
The donghua Weibo account also uploaded another illustration of Lan Wangji but in chibi form. Lan Wangji has his elbows braced on a cup of green tea with an engraving of an intoxicated Lan Wangji defending his beloved Wei Wuxian from dogs. The inscription reads “Lan Wangji was here,” a throwback to when he went on a drunken rampage.
MDZS Reveals Audio Drama Extra and Manga Launch Date
In addition, the Japanese dub of the audio drama of Mo Dao Zu Shi released an animated chibi extra to celebrate Lan Er-gege’s birthday. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are sitting on their bed as the former counts down to his husband’s birthday. Wei Wuxian then promptly kisses Lan Wangji, saying he had decided he wanted to welcome his birthday with a kiss. In a translation by @/pusheensbutt, Lan Wangji said he wanted to spend his birthday with Wei Wuxian and that the time they spent together was special. Unfortunately, Lan Wangji doesn’t get to talk much (not that he does usually) before he conks out.
Fittingly, Mo Dao Zu Shi announced there would be a manga adaptation of the hit series on Wei Wuxian’s birthday and now they have revealed the manga would launch in the summer of 2024. They have also announced that dae would design the characters for the adaptation with ゆずりん illustrating the manga. A new key visual has also been released with the two characters under a loquat tree. The only splashes of colour on the monochrome palate are Wei Wuxian’s red ribbons, Lan Wangji’s cloud patterns on his robes and blue tassel on his guqin and the bright yellow of the loquats.
Based on the New York Times-best selling novel series by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, Mo Dao Zu Shi follows the brilliant, but unconventional, cultivator Wei Wuxian who becomes the most detested and feared cultivator after choosing the path of demonic cultivation. 13 years after his death, it seemed like the world had gone into a period of peace until he returns to the world of the living via summoning. Although Wei Wuxian had every intention to live peacefully without drawing attention to himself, a case about a ghost arm pulls him back into events from 13 years ago…and the man whom he once thought was his enemy.
Mo Dao Zu Shi donghua is available to watch on Viki and YouTube while the audio drama is accessible through Miss Evan. Seven Seas holds the official English license for the novel series and manhua adaptation.
