The new Medalist film will premiere in the first quarter of 2027.
The film, set after the events of Season 2, dropped a new teaser trailer with the figure skaters skating, jumping, and dancing across the ice. A new teaser visual was also released with Inori, wearing a beautiful red flowery dress, and Tsukasa doing a fist bump before Inori goes out to perform. It is unclear if this will be a new original story or a continuation of the manga. The film premieres on February 19, 2027.
Written and illustrated by Tsurumaikada, Medalist follows a young girl named Inori Yuitsuka who secretly practices at her local ice rink in the hopes that she may become a world-class figure skater. At 11 years old, Inori is considered too old to begin seriously training for a career as a professional athlete. With her mother discouraging her from pursuing the sport, it seems like all the cards are stacked against her. One day, she meets Tsukasa Akeuraji, a former ice dancer, who offers to coach her after being inspired by her talent.
The manga won in the general category at the Shogakukan Manga Award in 2023 and at the Kodansha Manga Award in 2024. The manga is available in English via Kodansha USA.
Medalist was flung into an anime adaptation by Studio ENGI in January 2025 with Yasutaka Yamamoto directing the first season. Season 1 spanned 13 episodes and featured figure skating choreography by Akiko Suzuki, Yuhana Yokoi, and Hinano Isobe. Rika Hongo and Suzuki will participate in the motion capture filming for Season 2. Hana will perform the opening theme song “Cold Night” while Conton Candy performs the ending theme song “Rookies.” Season 2 premiered on January 24 on Disney+.
The film opens in theaters in Japan on February 19, 2027. There is no announcement of an international premiere as of this article’s writing.
