The award-winning sci-fi danmei Little Mushroom will end in November.
Seven Seas revealed the cover for the second and final volume of Little Mushroom. This cover, designed by Ruthie, features Lu Feng in the center, while in the background, he gazes at Anzhe. The first volume had a blue color scheme while the artist opted for a purple color scheme for the second volume. kKen provided the interior illustrations. Yu and amixy translated the series. The hardcover will feature a dust jacket with new art, illustrations against the hardcover itself, and printed edges. The hardcover reads: “Do not go gentle into that good night.”
Written by Yi Shi Si Zhou, Little Mushroom, which won the Silver Award at the 2021 Chinese Science Fiction Nebula Awards, follows a mushroom named Anzhe who takes on the identity of a human named An Zhe after the latter dies. After the humans have taken Anzhe’s spore, he is seized by the instinctual need to reclaim it even if that means walking into the Northern Base which is presided by a merciless Judge named Lu Feng who will not hesitate to eliminate any invaders and parasites.
Little Mushroom was previously licensed by Peach Flower House but the publisher’s closure left the fate of its already licensed books up in the air. Seven Seas subsequently licensed Little Mushroom as well as its other titles, however, the announcement of the first volume cover was mired with controversy when fans found issue with the naming conventions of the protagonist. The negativity and harassment got to the point where one of the translators deactivated their social media account and Seven Seas put out a statement, denouncing all harassment against its employees and freelancers.
Volume 2 is described below:
Damage to the magnetic field generators throws Earth’s fragile atmosphere into turmoil. Lu Feng is dispatched to the distant Underground City Base to repel a swarm of mutant monsters and repair its failing generator, but even if he manages to succeed, will Anzhe and the other inhabitants of the Northern Base survive until his return? With no path forward, Anzhe seizes his spore and flees into the wilderness.
But the world beyond is growing ever stranger. Bizarre new creatures roam, and unfamiliar phenomena reshape the land. As the world falls apart around them, the distance between the Judge and an aberration may prove too great to bridge.
The second volume of Little Mushroom comes out on November 17.
