Jun Maeda, Creator of Clannad and Angel Beats, Diagnosed with Throat Cancer

Jun Maeda, the influential writer and composer behind some of anime and visual novels’ most beloved tearjerkers, has been diagnosed with throat cancer. The announcement came on October 19 via Key’s official channels, the studio he co-founded.

According to the statement, Maeda began experiencing discomfort in his throat in early spring 2026. The swelling and pain worsened over the summer, leading to detailed medical examinations and a diagnosis of pharyngeal cancer. He is currently hospitalized.

After reviewing his condition and treatment options, Maeda chose not to pursue active treatment. Instead, he will focus on palliative care, aiming to conserve his strength and devote his remaining time to creative work.

Maeda has finished his assigned work on Heaven Burns Red, the mobile game he writes and composes for. This includes the main story through the first half of Chapter 6, all major story elements leading to the chapter’s conclusion, and the lyrics and composition for the songs in the first half of Chapter 6.

He had also been planning a new long-term music project for YouTube. Following his diagnosis, he changed course to complete the songs he’s currently working on as quickly as possible. At his strong request, these will be released sequentially on YouTube.

The news has prompted an outpouring of support. Voice actress Megumi Ogata, who worked with Maeda on Angel Beats!, wrote: “Please stay alive”. Singer milet also shared a cover of the Clannad song “Chiisana Te no Hira” in support.

Jun Maeda’s works—Kanon, Air, Clannad, Angel Beats!—have moved millions to tears. Now, facing a terminal diagnosis, he has made a decision that feels deeply characteristic: choosing to spend whatever time remains doing what he loves. Fans wishing to send messages of encouragement can find contact information through Key’s official channels.
