The popular Korean drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo will be reimagined into a Japanese drama series called Extraordinary Attorney Minami.
Extraordinary Attorney Minami has released a thirty-second preview teaser which sees the characters in action. Former child actor Mana Ashida (Mother) will take on the titular role as the autistic lawyer. Takahashi Fumiya will star as Funai Minato who cheerfully greets her. Joining the two will be Kakuta Akihiro as Minamida Makoto, Hosoda Kanata as Takuma Himi, Kubo Shiori as Koharu Asahi, and Yamaguchi Makiya as Miyaji Kengo. A key visual was also released.
The original Korean drama aired in June 2022 for 16 episodes and is the tenth highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history. Starring Park Eun-bin, the story follows Woo Young-woo, an autistic lawyer who gets rejected from multiple law firms due to her neurodivergence. She finally lands a job at a top law firm and although she’s seen as odd and awkward, her emotional intelligence and photographic memory gains her respect. She deals each case with a unique approach and her, along with her colleagues fight for justice.
Kang Tae-oh starred opposite her as Lee Joon-ho and Kang Ki-young portrayed Jung Myung-seok, a senior attorney and Young-woo’s mentor.
The drama has won multiple accolades with Park winning the grand prize at the Baeksang Arts Awards, “Best Actress” at the Busan International Film Festival, and “Outstanding Asian Star” at the Seoul International Awards, and the drama winning “Best Picture” at the Korea Drama Awards, “Content Against Discrimination” at the Content that Changed the World Awards, and “Best Content” at the Busan International Film Festival.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo has inspired adaptations including a webcomic, an English-language adaptation, and other remakes in other languages. The Japanese remake, Extraordinary Attorney Minami, will launch on Netflix on October 19.
