August 19 is Haikyuu!! Day and Haikyuu!! has unveiled the trailer for the special anime episode Where Monsters Go which revolves around Fukurodani’s match-up against Mujinazaka. The short PV hints at ferocious battles as each team scrabbles for every single point with each player playing their absolute best. It’s a match that places Japan’s top aces, Fukurodani’s Bokuto and Mujinazaka’s Kiryu, against each other in a must-win situation. A key visual was also released, featuring the two aces leaping up to spike.
A new key visual for the anime film Haikyuu!! vs The Little Giant was also revealed which pits Hinata against Kamomedai’s Hoshiumi who bears the same nickname as the Karasuno player who inspired Hinata to play volleyball in the first place.
Haikyuu!! began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump on Feb. 20, 2012 and ran until July 20, 2020. The series contains 45 tankōbon volumes with 402 chapters. The story follows Shoyo Hinata who enrols in Karasuno High School after watching a volleyball player nicknamed “The Little Giant” play in a game. Inspired by the athlete who was able to break through walls despite his short stature, Hinata tries out for the team despite knowing nothing about the sport but possessing an extraordinary athleticism. Haikyuu!! follows the progress of the various volleyball players as they come together as a team and chase their dreams. The manga has garnered positive acclaim for its humour, character development and storytelling.
The manga inspired an anime adaptation with Season 1 premiering in April 2014 with 25 episodes and featured Karasuno coming together as a team and competing in the Interhigh. Season 2 aired in October 2015 with 25 episodes and featured Karasuno’s training camp and competing in the Spring High Preliminary. Season 3 aired in October 2016 with 10 episodes and focused on the match between Karasuno and powerhouse school Shiratorizawa. Season 4, titled Haikyuu!! To the Top aired for 25 episodes from January 2020 to December 2020, and focused on Karasuno’s first time at the Nationals. Mitsunaka directed Seasons 1 to 3 while Masako Satō directed the fourth season. Haikyuu!! announced the rest of the manga would be wrapped up in a two-part final film series with the first part, Haikyuu!! The Dumpster Battle releasing on February 16, 2024.
Both the second part of the finale film series and anime special will release in 2027.
