Goodbye, Lara‘s sheer popularity has led to a manga adaptation of the original anime.
The social media account for Goodbye, Lara announced that Saburouta, the writer and illustrator of yuri manga Citrus, will helm the manga adaptation. The adaptation will launch in October on Kadokomi Web. There is currently no word of an English platform. Fans can catch a sneak preview of the art style for the manga adaptation below which depicts Lara and Mari:
Created and animated by Kinema Citrus (My Happy Marriage and Made in Abyss), Goodbye, Lara is their second original work. Their first was in 2009 when they co-animated Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 which won the Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2009.
Goodbye, Lara was created for the studio’s 15th anniversary and launched in July 2026. Takushi Koide directed the anime with Anna Kawahara working on the series composition. Shiori Tani designed the characters and Yuma Yamaguchi composed the music. Hana Hishikawa voices Lara and Nana Kawaishi portrays Mari.
In a reimagination of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale, The Little Mermaid, Goodbye, Lara follows a redheaded mermaid princess named Lara who, after getting rejected by a human prince, dissolves into foam. Two hundred years later, she resurrects in Lake Biwa and meets a high schooler named Mari Otsu. Lara discovers that everyone in her kingdom has fallen into a deep sleep and the only way for her to awaken them is by finding true love with a human. Could Mari be the answer to Lara’s questions?
Crunchyroll streams the series and the final episode is slated to air on September 21.
