Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2’s Chaotic and Messy Trailer is Everything You Want in the Sequel

If you loved the gory and messy bits from Cyberpunk Edgerunners, you won’t be missing out on that in the sequel.

A new trailer for the upcoming and highly anticipated show Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 was dropped and offers a little more insight into what fans can expect to see. The tagline of “The line between redemption and revenge will blur” hints that the sequel will have a revenge plotline just as the first season did, but with key distinctive features that separate it from Cyberpunk Edgerunners. The trailer devolves into quick scenes of malfunctioning screens, rapid-fire gunshots, and a burning city filled with burning bodies. A voice asking, “You’re a weapon? A weapon made out of people” ends the trailer along with a child’s giggles.

The synopsis is as follows:

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 pulls you back into Night City, where lives become entangled to the extreme. Weak, a washed-up cyberpunk legend, is now forced to live without chrome as he searches for a sense of purpose in a world that’s passed him by. Meanwhile, the deadly nomad D sets out on a path to revenge that brings him close to corpo secrets never meant to be found. Across this ten-episode standalone series, uncover a story of family, obsession, legacy — and how your lens reflects the stories of the people around you.

The second seasons will be directed by Kai Ikarashi with Studio TRIGGER animating and producing. Masahiko Otsuka will handle the series composition and Ichigo Kanno will design the characters. The voice casting list is as follows:

• Once known as “King,” a veteran edgerunner at the top of his game, Weak now lives in the shadow of his former glory. Weak will be voiced by Kentaro Tone and Clancy Brown.
• A Snake Nation netrunner with sharp technical skills and a sharper hunger for revenge, D hunts the killer who wiped out his clan. Koki Uchiyama and Nazeeh Tarsha will voice D.
• Roman Carax is a young cinephile chasing real stories in a city that’s abandoned film for braindance. Obsessed with documenting truth, he shadows the lives of others — only to learn that unlike his favorite reels, Night City’s stories are messy, brutal, and rarely tied up with a clean ending. Momoka Terasawa and Valeria Rodriguez will voice Roman.
• Raised in corpo towers but hardened in Maelstrom’s grip, Talia is fiercely independent and steeped in the gang’s hyper-violent, chrome-obsessed culture. Akari Kito and Kimoy Lee will voice Talia Yang.

The first iteration of the Cyberpunk Edgerunners series aired on September 13, 2022 on Netflix with 10 episodes and followed a street kid named David Martinez who becomes an edgerunner–a cybernetically-enhanced mercenary outlaw–and joins a crew which includes Lucy, Maine, Dorio, Kiwi, Pilar, Rebecca, and Falco. Because of David’s high tolerance for cyberware, he continues to modify his body in order to protect his loved ones and Night City. Cyberpunk Edgerunners is set in the Cyberpunk 2077 video game universe although it is a related to the story in the game itself.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners received critical acclaim and won numerous awards including “Best Anime,” “Best Director,” and “Best Action Anime,” at the Japan Expo Awards. Although the second season will not see the crew from Season 1 return, fans can witness the birth of a new legend.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 comes out on Netflix on October 20. It will have 10 episodes.
