Chiikawa is officially a K-Pop idol—sort of.
The beloved creature and its friends Usagi and Hachiware made a surprise appearance on M Countdown, the popular weekly ranking show featuring live performances and ranking the top idol groups and soloists based on sales and fan votes. Joining them was the mysterious siren from the hit film The Secret of Mermaid Island.
The Secret of Mermaid Island has grossed over $100 million USD and stands as the 14th highest-grossing film in Japan of all time. It also famously beat Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the box office in Japan.
Between Usagi’s rap officially being added to karaoke and Chiikawa’s M Countdown performance, fans are left wondering: can an album release be far behind? These cuties have already conquered theaters, YouTube, and now the music charts. A full Chiikawa album feels less like a question of “if” and more like “when.”
Chiikawa’s cultural takeover continues. From record-breaking box office numbers to a K-Pop stage debut, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down. If an album does happen, you can bet it’ll chart!
