Chiikawa Fans Rally with Petition to Bring The Secret of the Mermaid Island to North America

Chiikawa fans in North America are rallying together, hoping to bring the adorable critters to the big screen. A Change.org petition has been launched urging decision-makers to release The Secret of the Mermaid Island in North American theaters .

After a record-breaking opening in Japan, where the film earned ¥990 million on its first day—beating Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the box office in Japan—the film has since made its debut in Southeast Asia, including theaters in Singapore and Malaysia. It has already grossed over ¥2.2 billion in its first three days in Japan.

Petition starter Mion wrote: “I believe that many of us are looking to see the Chiikawa movie in theatres. As of the moment, it is not available in North America and is only available in select Asian regions. We may not be able to go to Japan, but we can still make a difference. By signing this petition, it will increase our chances of getting the Chiikawa movie in our home countries.”

The petition has garnered 494 signatures as fans share it across social media. While a North American release remains unconfirmed, the film’s success abroad and the growing grassroots campaign may influence decision-makers. Whether the film premieres in North America remains to be seen, but with the impact anime has made at the box office in America, it would seem a missed opportunity not to.
