If you thought sports anime couldn’t get any more realistic, AOASHI is here to prove you wrong. The team behind the hit soccer series touched down at Anime Expo 2026 for a panel aptly titled “AOASHI — Changing the Game of Sports Anime,” and they brought enough behind-the-scenes goodness to make even the most casual fan sit up and pay attention.
Hosted by MC Gigguk and anime/manga YouTuber Jay D. Legend, the panel featured producer Junichi Katsutani of Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions (ShoPro), who flew in from Japan to give fans the world’s first look at Season 2—and trust us, the hype is real.
A Recap and a Reinvention
After walking the crowd through Season 1, Katsutani reintroduced the story that’s captured hearts worldwide: Ashito Aoi, a raw striker from rural Ehime, gets scouted into the Tokyo City Esperion youth academy. But his true weapon isn’t just his instincts—it’s his “Eagle Eye,” a bird’s-eye vision that lets him see the entire field like a chess master. Across Season 1, Ashito evolved from a pure forward into a tactical playmaker, and Season 2 promises to take that evolution even further.
Jay D. Legend brought the fan energy with a “favorite scenes” segment, diving into the character moments that give AOASHI its signature emotional weight—because let’s be real, this series hits different when the stakes are this high.
World-First Look at Season 2
The crowd erupted when the preview video dropped, and the excitement didn’t let up when Katsutani unveiled a full scene from the upcoming season. If the cheers were any indication, Season 2 is going to be a banger.
From the Pitch to the Screen
The panel’s crown jewel was a deep dive into how AOASHI‘s jaw-dropping soccer sequences are made. Using a scene from Episode 3 of Season 2 (still in production, mind you), Katsutani walked fans through the entire process:
- Formation Footage – Simulating all 22 players on the field with reference to the original manga.
- Motion Capture – Bringing those movements to life with real athletes.
- CG Model Checks – Fine-tuning movement and camerawork.
- Final Animation – The polished, high-octane cut we actually see.
But it’s not just about the tech. Katsutani emphasized that Season 2 pays special attention to visual tempo and sound design, all aimed at recreating the immersive feeling of watching a live match—but with that extra dynamic energy only anime can deliver.
“We wanted the audience to feel the realism of watching an actual soccer match, combined with the dynamic energy that only anime can deliver. For Season 2 in particular, we’ve paid especially close attention to every detail from the pacing of the matches to the sound design.”
Esperion Tryout and Big Announcements
The fun didn’t stop there—the panel hosted an “Esperion Tryout” stage activity, combining a ball-juggling challenge with AOASHI trivia. Lucky winners walked away with autographed jerseys and signed soccer balls.
To close things out, the team unveiled a brand-new main visual for Season 2 and announced the launch of AOASHI‘s official English-language X account—meaning international fans finally have a direct line to all the latest news.
