Figure Skating Series Medalist Elegantly Spins Into Anime Adaptation

Figure skating manga series Medalist will reportedly receive an anime adaptation.

According to Manga Mogura RE, the widely-praised manga series Medalist will soon come to life as an anime adaptation. As of this article’s publishing, there has been no information on which studio will helm the production. Fans immediately took to Twitter to comment their excitement, with one writing “ABSOLUTE GOLDEN AGE OF ANIME” and “PEAK IS GETTING ANIMATED.” A few jokingly said it might be MAPPA, as the studio has been the name behind adapting popular works recently, before adding a GIF of Yuri!!! on Ice and saying “oh wait.”

Written and illustrated by Tsurumaikada, Medalist follows two lost individuals who find solace on the ice and with each other. Tsukasa Akeuraji, a 26-year-old figure skater who originally aimed for a solo career but had to switch gears and compete in ice dancing due to a late start in his competitive career. Tsukasa soon retires and unsure of what to do now, he happens across a fifth grader named Inori Yuitsuka who discovers a talent and passion for figure skating. Being all too familiar with the criticisms and discouragement from pursuing their dreams due to “starting out too late,” Tsukasa decides to coach Inori, determined to help the young figure skater realize her dreams.

Medalist started serialization in May 2020 in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon. The series won the 68th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2023 and received a nomination for the 47th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category in the same year.
