The Boy and the Heron Unveils Magical First Teaser Trailer
Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron has revealed its first trailer. The film opens in theatres in the USA and Canada on Dec. 8.

After releasing a preview teaser, GKIDS has dropped the first ever trailer for Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron. Originally titled How Do You Live?, the Hayao Miyazaki film had been localized to be titled The Boy and the Heron. Prior to its release in Japan, the film took an unconventional route in marketing and did not reveal any preview images or a trailer. This is the first time viewers will get a sense of what they’ll be watching.
The trailer opens up with a village getting firebombed and Mahito sprinting through a panicked crowd, searching for his mother. After losing his mother, Mahito moves to the countryside with his father after the latter marries Mahito’s pregnant aunt. There, he notices a large heron flying around and strange happenings begin occurring where he crosses into another world, enticed by the promise that he will see his mother once again.
Soma Santoki has been confirmed to be the voice actor for Mahito. Other credits include Masaki Suda, Kou Shibasaki, Aimyon, Yoshino Kimura, Keiko Takeshita, Jun Fubuki, Sawako Agawa, Karen Takizawa, Shinobu Ōtake, Jun Kunimura, Kaoru Kobayashi and Shohei Hino. Miyazaki directed and wrote the script with Takeshi Honda (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) as the animation director. Joe Hisaishi, who composed scores for numerous Ghibli films including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, will return as the composer. Kenshi Yonezu (Chainsaw Man) performs the theme song “Chikyūgi” which translates to “Globe.” The Boy and the Heron marks Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years.
The Boy and the Heron opens at TIFF on Sept. 7. The film releases in theatres in the USA and Canada and in IMAX on Dec. 8.
