Spy x Family’s Forgers Have a Tea Party in Season 2 Opening

The Forgers are inviting fans to join them on an adorable and tea-rrific Season 2. Spy x Family has dropped the Season 2 opening ahead of its Oct. 7 premiere.

It turns out, it’s a lot harder than it looks to have a cup of tea.

Spy x Family dropped their opening theme song for Season 2, surprising fans with the unexpected reveal. The opening was directed and storyboarded by acclaimed director and screenwriter Masaaki Yuasa. Ado performs the opening theme song “Kurakura” with meiyo as the lyricist and composer. Vaundy, feat. Cory Wong, will sing the ending theme song “Todome no Ichigeki.”

The opening theme song is filled with whimsy and humour, a trademark of Spy x Family, as it focuses on the Forgers trying to enjoy their tea. Loid, Yor, and Anya who is later joined by Bond, as they march forward, their feet magnifying comedically every time they come closer to the camera. It changes to Yor and Loid’s silhouettes in their alter-ego forms with Yor brandishing her needles and Loid avoiding gun shots. Meanwhile, Anya and Bond are attacked by everyone’s thoughts, thanks to her telepathy and his foresight.

The family takes their cups of tea out on a drive and it’s a true testament to Loid’s driving skills that despite all the swerving, the tea doesn’t spill out. When the family submerge into the water, aboard a submarine before jumping onto a jet, tea streams out of the teapot that’s helpfully caught by Yor. The Forgers next go skydiving where Loid once again tries to pour Anya a cup of tea but it flies upwards into Yor’s cup who flips upside down to take a sip. The opening theme ends with the Forgers marching once again, but this time with a cup of tea in their hands.

Based on Tatsuya Endo’s best-selling manga series, Spy x Family follows a found family comprised of a spy, an assassin and a telepath. Twilight, an elite WISE spy, has been tasked with an important mission called Operation Strix where he must find a family, enroll his child into a prestigious private school to get close to a man who has the power to disrupt the fragile peace between Westalis and Ostania. The problem is, he doesn’t have a wife nor a child. After donning on a fake identity as a psychiatrist named Loid Forger, he manages to get married and have a child, all in a span of seven days. The problem is, he doesn’t realize his wife, Yor, isn’t a city staffer–she’s an assassin, and his daughter Anya isn’t six years old–she’s a four year old telepath.

The first season was a joint production between CloverWorks and Wit Studio with Kazuhiro Furuhashi directing. It aired with 25 episodes in a split-cour format from April to October 2022. Season 2 will see Furuhashi returning to direct with Takahiro Harada as the assistant director, Ichiro Okouchi as the series script supervisor. Kazuaki Shimada will return as the character designer and [K]NoW_NAME as the music producer. Yoko Kanno arranges and performs the music.

Spy x Family will also have an original movie called Spy x Family Code: White where Loid whisks the entire family off to another country so Anya can try and recreate the favourite meal of the Eden Academy principal, after he hears he may be replaced in Operation Strix. The film has collaborated with Street Fighter 6 and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1. Spy x Family Code: White premieres on Dec. 22, 2023. Spy x Family also announced its first video game, called Spy x Anya: Operation Memories where Anya will create a photo diary of her life.
