A Dark Fantasy Born From Award-Winning Origins
Sentenced to Be a Hero began as a web novel on Kakuyomu in 2020, quickly earning acclaim among readers. The series won the User Recommendations category in the 2020 Kakuyomu Awards and secured second place overall in the Tsugirano Awards for rising light novel titles. Its popularity led to a print release under Kadokawa’s Dengeki no Shin Bungei imprint, featuring illustrations by MEPHISTO. Now, the brutal, high-stakes saga is making its jump to anime.
Story Preview: Punishment, Resurrection, and War
In this world, becoming a “Hero” is the worst fate imaginable. Criminals convicted of heinous acts are forcibly conscripted into a penal military unit and sent to fight in humanity’s endless war against the Demon Lords. Death is not an escape—every fallen Hero is resurrected and pushed back onto the battlefield.
Xylo Forbartz, once a proud leader of the Order of the Holy Knights, now finds himself branded a criminal and thrust into the front lines as the commander of this disposable unit. Amid the chaos, he encounters Teoritta, one of the strongest living weapons ever created.
“When every last enemy has been defeated, you are to shower me with praise and pat my head.”
Bound by a pact with a goddess and driven by vengeance, Xylo steps into a world of unending warfare, divine power, and moral collapse as he seeks the truth behind those who betrayed him.
With its bleak premise, intense emotional stakes, and rich worldbuilding, Sentenced to Be a Hero is shaping up to be one of 2026’s most anticipated dark fantasy anime adaptations.
