Painter of the Night Creator Reveals Side Story Plans
Painter of the Night may have finished the final story but the BL manhwa still has some side stories left that will showcase Seungkyum’s “most unhinged lovey-dovey happy sexy times.”
In the words of Seungkyum, Painter of the Night will never be over because “we’ll be together forever.”
The hit BL manhwa Painter of the Night recently wrapped up its story on Nov. 10. The creator, Byeonduck, penned and illustrated a Creator’s Note, thanking readers for their love and support, explain the process of writing such a popular work, and her plans for the story’s future. In the note, the creator revealed Painter of the Night would have side stories showcasing Seungho and Nakyum’s “most unhinged lovey-dovey happy sexy times.”
The English translation of Lezhin Comics noted the side story “will feature a modern-day AU with a social status flip” but it appears to be incorrect. A few Twitter users have noted the Korean version has indicated Byeonduck will write a side story episode or episodes in the original setting, another side story featuring a role reversal where Seungho is a lowborn and Nakyum is a noble of which she has written three chapters of already, and a possible modern AU.
Byeonduck also revealed how Painter of the Night began and revealed she had been apprehensive of creating a story set in the Joseon era. The creator also wrote the BL series could have been a comedy. “I came up with two storyboards, one serious, one comedic,” she wrote. “In the comedic one, Na-kyum was just totally unhinged whereas Seungho was actually more hinged and something of a well-mannered pervert.” Ultimately, Byeonduck went with the serious storyboard after listening to feedback from her mentor who disclosed writing a comedy series would be much more challenging to turn into a hit.
The creator’s note was a particularly long one with Byeonduck thanking all of Painter of the Night‘s readers for their love and support. Included in the note were congratulatory illustrations and messages from numerous other BL mangaka and fans all over the world.
Byeonduck has revealed her plans to get healthy first before beginning to work on the physical copies and drawing illustrations for another story. The creator revealed it is her hope that she can release the side story by summer 2024.
