Mo Dao Zu Shi Donghua to Stream on Crunchyroll
Welcome to Crunchyroll, Wangxian!
Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) will join its younger brother on Crunchyroll.
Crunchyroll dropped a surprise announcement on their X (formerly known as Twitter) on December 10 to let fans know they were adding to their donghua catalogue with the first two seasons of Mo Dao Zu Shi. Writer Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s third novel Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official’s Blessing) was one of the earliest danmei donghua to make its appearance on the streaming platform and currently has the first two seasons available to watch. Seasons 1 and 2 will stream on December 11.
Mo Dao Zu Shi is the second novel Mo Xiang Tong Xiu wrote and, fun fact, the writer marks this through her characters. Her first novel Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong (Scum Villain’s Self-saving System) has Luo Binghe as the “big brother” while Lan Wangji in MDZS is affectionately called Lan er-gege by Wei Wuxian which means “Lan Second Brother.” Heaven Official’s Blessing‘s Xie Lian often calls Hua Cheng by San Lang which means “third son.”
Mo Dao Zu Shi was written on October 31, 2015 and concluded on March 1, 2016. The story follows a talented cultivator named Wei Wuxian who, thirteen years ago, was killed during an attack. Wei Wuxian has been a contentious figure in the cultivation world due to his choice to walk on the demonic path. When he died, the cultivation world rejoiced, relieved that such a terrifying figure has been vanquished once and for all.
Unfortunately for them, Wei Wuxian returned via self-sacrificial ritual in a new body. Though surprised, he takes it in stride and begins solving mysteries, namely a dismembered corpse. What does cause him to stumble is the appearance of a man whom, thirteen years ago, seemed hell-bent on capturing him and punishing him. Wei Wuxian doesn’t expect the man, the illustrious and virtuous Lan Wangji, to change but to his surprise, Lan Wangji is no longer the same person that he once knew.
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s trio of novels marked Seven Seas Entertainment’s first foray into the danmei market with MDZS debuting at #9 on The New York Times Best Seller list. The series was published, uncensored, into five volumes and includes the extra chapters.
The popularity of Mo Dao Zu Shi also led to a live-action adaptation called The Untamed which starred Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo as the main characters and was one of the highest-earning dramas of 2019.
Mo Dao Zu Shi is available to watch on YouTube and on Crunchyroll.
