Manta Comics Launches In-House Studio, Unveils Plans for 10 Original Webcomics
Manta Comics has big plans this year as they launch their in-house studio that will be in charge of producing original webcomics.
Manta Comics revealed it plans to release a whole slate of original webcomics through its new in-house studio.
On July 6, as part of its ongoing expansion of in-house productions, Manta Comics announced their plans to release over 10 original series through its in-house studio called Manta Studios. Composed of talented and experienced creators with a proven track record, Manta Studios has mainly focused on adapting its parent company RIDI Corporations’ owned and licensed web novels and movies into webcomics. These series will launch throughout the third quarter of 2023. The first three on the slate are The Lady Alchemist, Falling for Danger and Countdown to Love with the latter two fully developed in-house with original artwork and storylines and Manta having full ownership of the IP.
“Manta Studios is the engine at the heart of our success, and we are thrilled to showcase the team’s newest creations and the limitless possibilities,” said Moonseok Jeong, COO and Head of Content at Manta. “We remain committed to creating stories that will resonate with readers around the world, and the continuous expansion of our Studio’s capabilities will play a significant role in further establishing Manta as a leading brand offering top-of-the-line storytelling across multiple genres.”
Manta Comics also welcomed Stephen Lee as its new Chief Business Development Officer. Before coming to Manta, Lee served as Nexon’s CBDO and Head of Global Business. At Manta, Lee will oversee the company’s expansion, strategy and sales initiatives in the IP business.
Falling for Danger combines action, romance and a thirst for revenge. A renowned hitman, Hale Windsor turns his sights on his own organization after they betray him and kill the love of his life. Things seem dark and hopeless until he meets a young woman named Marine who brings a burst of colour into his life. Falling for Danger released on June 26.
Countdown to Love is the first BL series from Manta Studios and is a coming of age school life series. Hoon had dreams of becoming a basketball star but that all disappears when he suffers an ankle injury that ends his athletics career. From that day on, he sees a timer in the sky and believes it’s counting down to the day he dies. That is, until he realizes his classmate Haedam can see the same timer.
Launching on July 14, The Lady Alchemist is based on the original novel by Samantha Vitale. The story is a steampunk fairytale retelling of Rumpelstiltskin and follows a woman named Sepha who must turn a mountain of straw into gold after she lands herself in prison. Things seem hopeless until a magician materializes before her with an offer: He’ll turn all that straw into gold if she will give him her firstborn.
Prior to the announcement, Manta Studios had already released three original works titled The Blood Moon, Werewolves Going Crazy Over Me and The Superheroes of Class F which debuted on March 19, May 18 and May 20, respectively. The Blood Moon began as a pilot project on Aug. 25 where five episodes released and quickly became a favourite amongst fans. The Superheroes of Class F is Manta Comics’ first superheroes series.
Manta Comics debuted in November 2020 with a library that contained predominantly romance stories but has since expanded it to include other genres such as horror, suspense and action. Its app has been downloaded 10 million times as of March 2023. Many of its works, including Semantic Error, The New Recruit and The Director Who Buys Me Dinner have received live-action adaptations.
Operating on a monthly subscription, Manta Comics is available for download on Android and iOS devices.
