It has been eight months since Season 4 ended, but the popular romantasy series Under the Oak Tree is finally making its long-awaited comeback with Season 5 on November 22.
Under the Oak Tree, one of the first romantasy titles on the webcomics platform Manta, remains as its top title. The manhwa, adapted by Namu and Seomal based on Kim Suji’s webnovel, has stolen romantasy fans’ hearts with its beautiful and tender love story between Maxi and Riftan. The manhwa has garnered praise for P’s breathtaking artwork. Season 4, which premiered on September 2, 2024 concluded with a cliffhanger on March 22, 2025, leaving fans desperate to read the next chapter to know the aftermath.
Season 5 will put Maxi and Riftan’s relationship to the test as it will “delve deeper into [the two’s] evolving relationship as they face new trials, political intrigue, and the lingering scars of their pasts.”
The popularity of Under the Oak Tree has led to the print release of both the manhwa and the novel, both published by Inklore, the manhwa imprint of Penguin Random House. Published on November 5, 2024, the first volume of the novel debuted on the New York Times Bestselling Hardcover Fiction List at #7, and has made history as the first novel originally written in Korean to land on the list. In addition, the novel also made it on the USA Today’s Bestselling Book List at #42. Volume 2 released on November 18.
The print edition of the manhwa was published a little earlier on September 3, 2024 with Volume 2 recently published on September 30.
The story follows Maxi, the disgraced stuttering daughter of Duke Croyso, who is forced into a marriage with a lowborn knight named Riftan. Maxi doesn’t think she’ll ever find love and her suspicions seem to be confirmed when Riftan disappears after their wedding night. Three years later, he returns. Despite all of the rewards he could wish for as a war hero, including the hand of the beautiful princess Agnes, he, much to Maxi’s shock and confusion, still wants her. As Maxi navigates her new life as the lady of the Calypse estate, she realizes that she has a voice–one that can be very powerful if she’s brave enough to use it.
Season 5 of Under the Oak Tree launches on Manta on November 22 and can be read by those who have subscribed to their library.
