Hades and Persephone’s love story will hit the television screen at Amazon.

The wildly popular webtoon Lore Olympus has finally confirmed its new home for its animated adaptation. The series will make its debut on Amazon Prime Video although no date has been announced yet. Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company will produce the series along with Amazon MGM Studios.

Julia Cooperman (Colony and The Winchesters) will helm the series as the writer, showrunner and executive producer. Joining Cooperman as executive producers will be Webtoon Productions’ David Madden and Sydney bright and The Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Delaney Shiokari will serve as the executive in charge of production. Lore Olympus will be The Jim Henson Company’s first adult animated series.

Cooperman had always been interested in Greek mythology ever since she was a child. “Reading Lore Olympus, I was reminded of the enduring power of these tales, which echo through so much of our modern-day storytelling,” she said. “We can’t wait to share this frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining of Persephone and Hades’ story with new audiences and longtime readers alike.”

Lore Olympus [has] redefined what mythology can look and feel like for a new generation, and we’re thrilled to bring this beloved story to our global Prime Video audience,” Melissa Wolfe, the head of animation at Amazon MGM Studios, said.

Rachel Smythe began posting Lore Olympus on Tumblr and WEBTOON Discover in 2017 before moving to WEBTOON Canvas in March 2018 where it ran for free seasons until June 2024. Lore Olympus has more than 1.8 billion global views. The series, a modern retelling of Hades and Persephone’s story, won the Eisner Award for “Best Webcomic” for two years in a row and was nominated for “Best Graphic Story or Comic” in the Hugo Awards in 2022. The year before, the webcomic won “Digital Book of the Year” at the 2021 Harvey Awards.

Talk about an animated adaptation had been reported as early as October 2019 but little information had been released since other than assurances from WEBTOON that it was “currently in development.” It is unclear if Smythe will have any involvement in the development of the series.

Lore Olympus is available to read on WEBTOON and in print via Inklore.
