Kodansha Announces Winners of the 47th Manga Awards

Skip and Loafer, My Girlfriend’s Child and Shangri-La Frontier win the top awards in their respective categories.

Kodansha has revealed the three winners of the 47th Manga Awards.

Best General Manga

Nominees (winner in bold)

  • Onna no Sono no Hoshi – Yama Wayama
  • Skip and Loafer – Misaki Takamatsu
  • The Darwin Incident – Shun Umezawa
  • Manshū Ahen Squad – Tsukasa Monma and Shikako
  • Medalist – Tsurumaikada
  • Liaison: Kodomo no Kokoro Shinryōsho – Yonchan and Yūsaku Takemura

Created by Misaki Takamatsu, Skip and Loafer is a slice-of-life manga following Mitsuki Iwakura who moves to a high school in Tokyo with big plans. However, things go awry on her first day of school when she gets lost and bumps into popular highschooler Sōsuke Shima. Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed the manga in English.

Best Shōjo Manga

Teen pregnancy stories are rarely discussed in manga and it’s even rarer to depict it in such a respectful and touching manner. Mamoru Aoi’s My Girlfriend’s Child follows Sachi and her boyfriend Takara who seem like the average couple. That is, until Sachi decides to take a pregnancy test and her and Takara’s lives are changed forever. Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed the manga in English

Originally a web novel series written by Katarina, Shangri-La Frontier received a manga adaptation by Ryōsuke Fuji in July 2020. Shangri-La Frontier follows Rakuro Hizutome who loves playing terrible trashy games and prides himself in beating them despite all their glitches. When he happens across a full-dive VR game named “Shangri-La Frontier,” Rakuro dives in as Sunraku, expecting it to be like any other trashy game he’s played before. Little does he know, “Shangri-La Frontier” has secrets even he can’t predict. Kodansha has licensed the manga in English. An anime adaptation will air in October 2023.
