Kakao Entertainment Identified as Driving Force Behind Bato.to Piracy Shutdown

The sudden shutdown of Bato.to, one of the world’s largest manga and manhwa piracy sites, has been confirmed as the result of legal action led by Kakao Entertainment.

Through its anti-piracy enforcement unit, P.CoK, the South Korean entertainment company has been pursuing coordinated legal action against Bato.to’s operator as well as affiliated moderators and community managers. The pressure ultimately led to the site going offline and the closure of its official Discord server.

Bato.to had operated for years as a major scanlation aggregation hub, drawing millions of monthly visitors through its main site and numerous mirrors. However, moderators reported technical issues beginning late last year after the site’s operator became unreachable, signaling deeper instability.

Following the shutdown, the official Bato.to subreddit publicly cut ties with piracy-related activity, stating that all support for the site had permanently ended. Newly formed reading communities have also implemented strict rules banning illegal content and directing users toward official platforms such as WEBTOON and Tapas.

Kakao Entertainment has confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway against Bato.to’s founder and core developer. In addition, cease-and-desist letters have reportedly been issued to moderators and administrators connected to the site.

P.CoK also indicated that enforcement efforts are continuing, with additional piracy sites—including MangaPark and AniXL—now under investigation as part of the broader crackdown.
